200,000 Bulgarians Cast Votes Abroad, 53,000 Voted by Machine, Says Foreign Minister Neynsky

During a briefing on Monday, caretaker Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky provided an update on the voting process following Bulgaria’s early parliamentary elections held on April 19. The foreign election turnout was significant, with nearly 200,000 Bulgarian citizens who voted from abroad. Of this total, 53,000 voters utilized machine voting systems.

Minister Neynsky noted a logistical challenge regarding voter registration. She reported that 156,000 voters, representing 81% of the overseas electorate, had not completed advance registration and instead submitted applications to vote on the official Election Day, which contributed to delays in processing. The Minister also detailed the ongoing voting activities across various international locations.

In the United States, ballot counting operations were reported as continuing in the westernmost voting sections. In Turkey, voting extended past the scheduled end of Election Day in seven specific sections due to high numbers of people waiting to cast their ballots. Further international reporting indicated operational extensions in other countries.

In the United Kingdom, five voting sections located in London required extended working hours. Additionally, voting continued past 8:00 PM in one section each in Spain and Norway, while two separate sections in Serbia also saw voting hours extended beyond the standard schedule.
