200,000 Bulgarians Cast Votes Abroad, 53,000 Voted by Machine, Says Foreign Minister Neynsky

During a briefing on Monday following Bulgaria’s early parliamentary elections held on April 19, Caretaker Foreign Minister Nadezhda Neynsky provided an update on the voting process abroad. The minister reported that nearly 200,000 Bulgarian citizens voted from overseas, including 53,000 individuals who cast their ballots using electronic machines. Neynsky noted that a significant portion of the electorate, 156,000 voters representing 81% of the total, had not completed advance registration and instead applied to vote on Election Day.

This method of registration, she explained, contributed to procedural delays at polling sites. Regarding international logistics, the Foreign Minister detailed ongoing voting activities in several countries. She confirmed that ballot counting was still in progress in the westernmost sections of the United States.

Furthermore, she reported that in Turkiye, voting extended past the official end of Election Day in seven separate sections due to high voter turnout and long queues. In the United Kingdom, five voting sections in London required extended operational hours. The minister also advised that voting continued after 8 p.m.

in a single section each in Spain and Norway, and in two sections across Serbia. The updates provided by the minister confirmed the extensive logistical coordination required for the Bulgarian diaspora to vote.
