Customs officials at the Lesovo border crossing seized a substantial quantity of marijuana from a lorry transporting washing machines, according to the Customs Agency on Friday. The narcotic substance was valued at approximately EUR 3 million at judicial prices. The incident occurred on Thursday when the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound lane from Romania.
In the customs control area, the driver, identified as a Turkish national, presented documentation indicating the transport of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria. He declared that he was transporting only the declared goods. During a comprehensive customs inspection, officers discovered 25 boxes positioned atop the declared washing machines within the cargo.
These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry, green leafy material. Field drug tests conducted on the contents of these packages yielded positive results for marijuana. Authorities subsequently seized a total of 362 kg of marijuana.
The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have commenced in relation to the case. The Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is scheduled to file a request with the court to impose a pre-trial detention measure.
