Customs authorities at the Lesovo border crossing seized a significant quantity of narcotics on Friday. The contraband was discovered in a lorry that was ostensibly transporting washing machines across international borders. According to the Customs Agency, the seized marijuana is valued at approximately EUR 3 million based on judicial pricing.
The incident occurred after the lorry, bearing Romanian registration, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound lane from Romania on Thursday. The driver, identified as a Turkish national, presented documentation asserting that the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania toward Turkey via Bulgaria, and declared nothing further for customs inspection. During a comprehensive customs examination, officers discovered 25 boxes concealed atop the declared washing machines within the cargo.
These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry, green leafy material. Field drug testing conducted on the contents confirmed the substance to be marijuana. Authorities subsequently seized a total weight of 362 kg of the narcotic.
The driver has been taken into custody, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in connection with the seizure. Furthermore, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is preparing to submit a formal request to the court for the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody. The operation underscores the ongoing efforts to secure the border against illicit trafficking.
