500-Plus Hectares of State Forest Will Be Re-Designated to Build Parking Facility Near Zemen Monastery

Municipal councilors recently approved the re-designation of over 500 hectares of state forest land to facilitate the construction of a public parking facility near the Zemen Monastery. According to Iva Borisova, Chair of the Zemen Municipal Council, Mayor Mihail Zlatanov submitted the request to change the designation of the state-owned plot. The proposal aims to transfer the property to municipal ownership for the development of the parking area.

Mayor Zlatanov argued that the land, which is currently coniferous forest, is strategically situated near the Zemen Monastery, a site that draws substantial year-round tourist traffic. Currently, the area lacks an alternative, designated space for buses to park, and visitors arriving by private vehicles often congregate in one spot, which reportedly complicates access to the monastery. Beyond the parking development, the council also approved several other proposals concerning local infrastructure.

These included plans for the restoration of land originating from the Municipal Land Fund in the villages of Divlya, Dolna Vrabcha, and the town of Zemen. Furthermore, funding was allocated for various local community needs. Specifically, funds were earmarked for the traditional fair held at the Zemen Monastery, as well as for the Pantele convention.

Additional provisions were made to support all local community gatherings and church feasts, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to local development within the municipality.

  1. Sacrificing 500 hectares of state forest land for a parking facility seems like an incredibly shortsighted use of resources.

  2. What environmental impact assessments were conducted regarding the clearing of 500 hectares of state forest land?
