52nd National Assembly Opens

Bulgaria’s 52nd National Assembly convened on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. The inaugural session was opened by Rumen Milanov, a 78-year-old Member of Parliament from Progressive Bulgaria, who addressed the newly constituted legislature. Milanov identified two primary objectives for the assembly: reinforcing the rule of law and maintaining peace.

He urged collaboration among all political factions, stating, “Regardless of our partisan differences, we must work together for our children’s future, respecting the work of our constituents and in the name of the Bulgarian people.” He emphasized that the “national spirit must rise above petty bickering and offences,” adding that the citizens placed their trust in the lawmakers. Following his address, Milanov administered the oath to the 240 lawmakers. The oath requires each representative to swear, “I do swear in the name of the Republic of Bulgaria that I will observe the Constitution and the laws of the land and will be guided in all my actions by the interests of the people.

I have sworn to it.”

The session included the playing of the Bulgarian national anthem and the anthem of Europe within the debating chamber. Members of Parliament from Vazrazhdane remained seated during the playing of the Ode to Joy. Following the ceremony, the MPs were instructed to sign the oath documentation and submit it to the administration.

The assembly’s opening marked a significant moment for the nation’s legislative body.

  1. It’s interesting to see the new legislative session beginning with a clear focus set by the opening address.
