The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising of 1876. The Bulgarian News Agency’s thematic publication explores the uprising through its archives, incorporating historical records of commemorations from BTA’s news service and bulletins. The issue features commentary from educators, public figures, and local representatives from the revolutionary districts associated with the event.
The launch of the magazine is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at the St St Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa, marked as the Day of the First Shot. This event will be jointly streamed with BTA’s national press clubs both in Bulgaria and internationally, with participation from Koprivshtitsa Municipality and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that the publication compiles key discussions held across BTA’s national press clubs and the centers of the four revolutionary districts: Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte.
He noted that the discussions highlighted lessons relevant to the present, emphasizing that despite perceived failures, the uprising ultimately led to Bulgaria’s freedom. Journalists and academics contributed perspectives on the uprising, including the youthful nature of its leaders. Prof.
Georgi Valchev suggested that the revolutionaries prioritized an unconditional, political existence over material accumulation. Another contributor deemed the April Uprising the “greatest collective endeavor of the Bulgarian people.”
The LIK magazine also includes a thematic timeline featuring news reports from BTA’s archives, spanning from the 1945 commemoration to contemporary coverage. The publication also references future events, noting that discussions marking the 150th anniversary are scheduled for 2026.
