Justice Minister Yankulov Urges Immediate Removal of Acting Prosecutor General, Calls for Swift Judicial Reform

Caretaker Justice Minister Andrey Yankulov stated on Monday that the judicial system should not remain under the leadership of an acting Prosecutor General whose tenure he described as contrary to law and morality. Following Sunday’s elections, Yankulov indicated that the results clearly identified Progressive Bulgaria as the victor and highlighted the significant decline of established political forces associated with the judiciary’s perceived corrupt status quo. According to Yankulov, a critical challenge for Bulgaria’s future is translating the public mandate for judicial reform into tangible political action.

He suggested that the poor electoral showing for parties invested in maintaining the current judicial structure demonstrates that citizens view reform as an unavoidable necessity. Yankulov expressed a desire for the immediate restoration of legality within the prosecution service, viewing this as a necessary initial step toward broader change. While he acknowledged the importance of swiftly electing a new composition for the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC), the minister emphasized that the process must prioritize proper procedure over speed.

He stressed the need to ensure that selected individuals are honest professionals committed to an independent, rather than party-influenced, justice system. Yankulov asserted that the SJC and its Prosecutors’ College had ample time over the last two months to recognize the situation and act with professional integrity. He warned that if they failed to do so, the newly formed parliament might address the issue through standard legislative action early in its session.
