Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by the Sofia Municipality. The event, held in Boris Garden Park to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising, took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley. Divided into teams, the students engaged in a historical scavenger hunt, tasked with locating monuments dedicated to national heroes and answering questions concerning Bulgarian history.
Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova, who oversees education and urban development, stated that the event aims to mark 150 years of a significant act of courage, encouraging students to engage with history outside of formal classroom settings. Participants followed designated routes connecting various monuments to revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski. To complete their journey, teams answered questions that led them to collect pieces of a symbolic map representing the uprising.
Upon concluding the walk, every team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, inspired by the knowledge they gained. The game’s concept was developed with the involvement of history teacher Emil Jassim and forms part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program, executed in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. The initiative provided a tangible way for students to connect with the footsteps of Bulgaria’s heroes.
