Students Walk “In the Footsteps of Heroes” to Mark 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

Students from Sofia schools participated in “In the Footsteps of the Heroes,” a historical game organized by Sofia Municipality. The event, held in the capital’s Boris Garden Park, commemorated the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The activity took place along the Prominent Bulgarians alley, where teams of students engaged in a historical scavenger hunt.

The educational initiative required participants to locate monuments dedicated to national heroes and answer questions concerning Bulgarian history. Deputy Mayor Desislava Zhelyazkova stated that the event marked 150 years of a significant act of courage, aiming to motivate students to connect with history beyond formal classroom settings. Participants followed designated routes connecting monuments honoring revolutionaries such as Vasil Levski, Hristo Botev, Zahari Stoyanov, Todor Kableshkov, and Georgi Benkovski.

By answering questions along these paths, the students collected pieces of a symbolic map representing the uprising. Upon concluding the walk, each team composed a brief message to the Bulgarian people, drawing inspiration from their learning experience. The game concept was developed with the input of history teacher Emil Jassim and is part of the Sofia Municipality’s cultural program.

This program is implemented in collaboration with Sofia’s Regional Education Directorate. The event successfully engaged students in tracing the footsteps of the heroes while learning about Bulgaria’s historical significance.
