Community Centres Have Bright Future, President Says

President Iliana Iotova stated that the Bulgarian community centre, a facility with a 170-year history, maintains a bright future in the 21st century. These centers, she noted, owe their longevity largely to the efforts of Bulgarian patriots and cultural figures who engaged in educational activities. According to the Presidential press service on Thursday, community centers played a foundational role in the formation of the Bulgarian community long before the modern Bulgarian State re-emerged.

The meeting, attended by Committee Chair Prof. Nikolay Doynov, other Committee members, and representatives from local and institutional authorities, focused on several key areas. Discussions addressed the need for measures concerning the financing of public community centers, alongside the conservation and renovation of existing building funds.

Attendees reviewed the legal framework governing the operation of these community centers and expressed a collective desire among Bulgarian communities abroad to establish new public centers. Currently, only a branch of the Prosveta 1870 National Community Centre in Svilengrad, Southern Bulgaria, exists in Edirne. Iotova emphasized that the further development of Bulgarian community centers should be a priority for all national institutions.

Participants conveyed hope that the National Assembly and the incoming government would prioritize cultural policies. Committee representatives acknowledged the President’s consistent support for the initiatives of these community centers. The meeting also covered organizational details for the anniversary celebrations, to which Iotova affirmed the full support of the Presidential institution.
