President Iliana Iotova affirmed the promising future of Bulgarian cultural institutions at a meeting with the National Representative Committee marking the 170-Year Anniversary of the national community centres. Speaking to the press service on Thursday, Iotova stated that these centers, which have historically relied on the efforts of Bulgarian patriots and cultural figures, maintain a bright outlook in the 21st century. She noted that these community hubs played a foundational role in forming the Bulgarian diaspora long before the reestablishment of the Bulgarian State.
The gathering included committee members, local and institutional representatives, and media personnel. Discussions centered on critical needs, specifically securing funding for public centres, alongside measures for the conservation and renovation of existing facilities. Attendees emphasized the necessity of strengthening the legal framework governing these institutions and expressed a strong desire among Bulgarian communities abroad to establish new public centres.
Currently, only one such facility operates in Edirne, serving as a branch of the Prosveta 1870 National Community Centre in Svilengrad. Iotova stressed that prioritizing the development of Bulgarian community centres should become a mandate for all national institutions. Participants voiced expectations that the National Assembly and the incoming government would elevate cultural policies.
Committee representatives acknowledged the President’s consistent support for the initiatives of these centers. The meeting also addressed the organizational details for the anniversary celebrations, to which Iotova reaffirmed the full backing of the Presidential institution.
