Crafts Three-Metre Replica of Giro d’Italia Trophy for Third Stage of Race

A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy is currently being constructed in Plovdiv to mark the third stage of the cycling race. According to Plovdiv 2019 Foundation Executive Director Kiril Velchev, the steel installation will be positioned at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Blvd, near the Water Palace, along the designated route. The replica is being crafted by the artists Nedyalka and Dimitar Mitkova.

The family noted that the complexity and distinct nature of the original cup presented a significant challenge. Known as the “Trofeo Senza Fine” (Endless Trophy), the design features a rising, spiral ribbon that narrows in the center, evoking the shape of an hourglass. Nedyalka Mitkova stated that creating this trophy was a significant honor and responsibility for the team.

The artists selected stainless steel for the installation to ensure longevity against weather and time. This material allows for the recreation of the polished effect visible on the original trophy, while also replicating a delicate shine on the exterior. Upon completion, the piece will be treated to achieve its original bronze coloration.

The total height of the installation is 4.5 metres, which includes a metal pedestal engraved with the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo. The structure is estimated to weigh approximately 1.5 tonnes, and spotlights will be installed at the base for nighttime illumination. BTA has also launched a dedicated section for the Giro d’Italia 2026, detailing Bulgaria’s participation in three stages scheduled from May 8 to 10, 2026.
