Crafts Three-Metre Replica of Giro d’Italia Trophy for Third Stage of Race

A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy is currently being fabricated in Plovdiv for the third stage of the cycling race. According to Plovdiv 2019 Foundation Executive Director Kiril Velchev, the steel installation will be situated at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Boulevard, near the Water Palace, along the designated route. The artwork is being produced by the artists Nedyalka Mitkova and Dimitar Mitkov.

The pair noted that the complexity and distinctive nature of the cup presented a significant challenge. The original award, known as the “Trofeo Senza Fine” (Endless Trophy), is characterized by its spiral ribbon design, which ascends and narrows, resembling an hourglass shape. The artists stated that creating this piece is a significant responsibility.

To ensure longevity, the team selected stainless steel for the installation. This material choice allows the replica to withstand weather while enabling the recreation of the original trophy’s polished interior effect, supplemented by a delicate shiny edge on the exterior. The final structure will measure 4.5 metres in total height.

The replica trophy itself is based on a three-metre scale model. Once finished, the piece will be toned to resemble the original bronze color. A metal pedestal, which will bear the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo, will anchor the structure, which is estimated to weigh about 1.5 tonnes.

Spotlights will be integrated at the base to illuminate the trophy at night. Separately, BTA has launched a new dedicated section titled “Giro d’Italia 2026 – Cycling in Bulgaria,” providing coverage for the three stages scheduled to pass through the country from May 8 to May 10, 2026.
