Crafts Three-Metre Replica of Giro d’Italia Trophy for Third Stage of Race

A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy is currently being constructed in Plovdiv to mark the third stage of the cycling race. According to Plovdiv 2019 Foundation Executive Director Kiril Velchev, the steel installation will be situated at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Boulevard, near the Water Palace, along the designated cycling route. The replica is being crafted by the artist company Nedyalka Mitkova and Dimitar Mitkov.

The team noted that replicating the trophy was challenging due to its highly distinctive and complex shape. Known as the “Trofeo Senza Fine” (Endless Trophy), the design features a spiral ribbon that rises upward and narrows in the center, resembling an hourglass. The artists selected stainless steel for the installation to ensure durability against weather and time.

This material also facilitated the recreation of the polished effect found within the original trophy, alongside a delicate shiny edge on the exterior. Once finished, the entire structure will be toned to match the original bronze color. The total height of the installation will reach 4.5 metres, including a metal pedestal engraved with the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo.

The structure is expected to weigh approximately 1.5 tonnes, and spotlights will be installed at the base for nighttime illumination. The replica itself is designed to be a substantial piece, reaching a height of three metres in key sections. Beyond the 2019 event, BTA has established a dedicated section on its website covering “Giro d’Italia 2026 – Cycling in Bulgaria,” detailing the country’s participation in three stages scheduled from May 8 to May 10, 2026.
