A replica of the Giro d’Italia trophy, reaching a height of three metres, is currently being constructed in Plovdiv for the third stage of the cycling race. According to Plovdiv 2019 Foundation Executive Director Kiril Velchev, the steel installation will be situated at the roundabout on Maritsa-Yug Blvd, near the Water Palace, along the designated route. The replica is being produced by the artistic team of Nedyalka and Dimitar Mitkova.
The family noted that the project presented a significant challenge due to the original trophy’s complex, distinctive, and recognizable shape. The original award, known as the “Trofeo Senza Fine” (Endless Trophy), features a design resembling a spiral ribbon that rises upward and narrows, evoking the appearance of an hourglass. The team selected stainless steel for the installation to ensure durability against weather and time.
This material also facilitated the recreation of the polished effect visible inside the original trophy, alongside a delicate shiny edge on the exterior. Upon completion, the entire structure will be treated to resemble the original bronze color. The total height of the installation is 4.5 metres, encompassing a metal pedestal that will be engraved with the year the Giro passed through the city and the Plovdiv logo.
The entire structure is estimated to weigh approximately 1.5 tonnes, and spotlights will be installed at the base for nighttime illumination. Separately, BTA has launched a new section dedicated to the Giro d’Italia 2026, focusing on Bulgaria’s hosting of three stages from May 8 to 10, 2026.
