An honorary consulate of the Russian Federation was recently opened in the northern Serbian city of Novi Sad, according to local media reports. Dusan Bajatovic, a director at Srbijagaz and a senior official with the Socialist Party of Serbia, was appointed as the consulate’s consul. The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Patriarch Porfiry, the Russian Ambassador to Serbia, Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Novi Sad Assembly Speaker Dina Vucinic, and former minister Aleksandar Vulin.
During the event, Bajatovic emphasized the deep historical and cultural connections between the Serbian and Russian peoples. He highlighted the commitment to strengthening bilateral ties through mutual understanding. Bajatovic also announced initiatives aimed at promoting cultural exchange and academic cooperation between Russia and Serbia.
He further detailed plans to establish student exchanges and foster cultural partnerships, stating the intent to increase knowledge transfer from Russia. A key focus of these efforts, according to Bajatovic, is the establishment of a new Russian school in the region. The goal, he stated, is to broaden awareness of Russia’s cultural, scientific, and natural assets among the local population, thereby deepening the relationship between the two nations.
The opening of this consulate marks a significant development in diplomatic and cultural engagement in Novi Sad.
