AES Bulgaria announced on Friday that it will implement a controlled and safe shutdown of the plant, placing it into a conservation mode. This measure is necessitated by the expiration of the long-term power purchase agreement between TPP AES Galabovo and the National Electricity Company (NEK). The company stated that this approach is intended to safeguard the facility and preserve potential future operational opportunities, issuing the statement in response to reports of potential mass layoffs in the region.
AES Bulgaria confirmed that future employment at the Galabovo facility will depend on its evolving operational status. The company emphasized its commitment to transparency with its workforce throughout the conservation process, assuring affected employees of respectful handling. Furthermore, AES Bulgaria noted that it has proactively informed Mini Maritsa-East, as the contract supplying lignite coal for electricity generation is set to expire concurrently.
In a broader strategic update, the company indicated it is maintaining continuous dialogue with Bulgarian authorities and relevant stakeholders. These discussions aim to explore alternative development opportunities that could allow the AES Galabovo Thermal Power Plant to continue contributing to Bulgaria’s energy security and grid reliability. AES Bulgaria clarified that these operational changes do not impact the Saint Nikola Wind Farm, which remains part of the investor’s portfolio.
