Market Discrimination Most Common in Hiring and Pay

A survey conducted by the Commission for Protection against Discrimination (CPD) involving 592 respondents revealed that 53.7% reported experiencing discrimination. The study, which analyzed manifestations of economic discrimination in Bulgaria between November and December 2024, highlighted several key areas of concern. In the labor market, 47.8% reported facing discrimination during hiring, while 33.1% noted issues related to pay.

Other reported forms of discrimination include receiving additional benefits (32.6%), working conditions (26.1%), and career development (31.2%). The CPD noted that older workers (53.8%), ethnic minorities (50.4%), and people with disabilities (36.1%) were among the groups most affected. Beyond employment, the CPD found discrimination when accessing essential services, with 36.5% citing issues in healthcare, education, and social care.

Further economic discrimination was reported in pricing goods (27.2%), public procurement (27.9%), and financial lending (25.4%). The survey indicated that the most common cause of economic discrimination is the imposition of negative perceptions toward certain groups. The CPD recommended strengthening non-discrimination regulations, increasing public awareness, and implementing regional measures to improve service and job access.

The CPD Chair stated that the leading area for protection remains the right to work on various grounds.
