Without Borders Observes Deterioration of Media Freedom Across Most Balkan Countries

Reporters Without Borders’ annual World Press Freedom Index indicates a general deterioration of media freedom across most countries in the Balkan region. While Kosovo shows notable improvement, rising 15 places in the ranking, the region faces varied challenges. Croatia and Greece have also recorded advancements, contrasting with declines seen in several other nations.

Bulgaria, for instance, ranks 71st, marking a one-place drop, and is classified as “problematic” regarding media freedom. Several other Balkan countries are similarly categorized. Slovenia remains the best-ranked in the region at 36th, though the organization notes concerns regarding insufficient protections for journalists, particularly the continued status of defamation as a criminal offense.

Other nations present mixed reports. Montenegro saw a decline, while North Macedonia faces challenges from widespread disinformation and a lack of professionalism eroding public trust in media outlets. Romania, despite a diverse landscape, struggles with opaque funding mechanisms and political interference affecting public broadcasting.

The report highlights systemic issues across the region. In countries like Albania and Cyprus, external influences—including government, religious, and business interests—exert significant sway over the press. While some nations report improvements, persistent threats from political interference, legal challenges, and economic pressure continue to challenge the foundational freedom of the press across the region’s countries.
