Six new instances of measles have been reported in Bulgaria, bringing the cumulative total to 165 recorded cases as of April 23, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. The recent additions were spread across several regions: two new cases were identified in Vratsa, two in Lovech, one in Pleven, and one in Sofia. In response to the ongoing outbreak, public health authorities have implemented measures to control the spread of measles.
Speaking on Wednesday, Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate at the Ministry of Health, reported significant vaccination efforts. He stated that since early March, 20,000 children have received vaccinations covering measles, mumps, and rubella. The situation escalated with the confirmation of the first eight measles cases on March 19, initially detected in the Vratsa region.
Following this initial cluster, health authorities promptly ordered emergency immunization protocols for all children identified as unvaccinated or under-vaccinated. These continuous reports underscore the ongoing vigilance required within the national health system. The Ministry continues to monitor the incidence of measles cases closely, emphasizing vaccination coverage as the primary strategy to mitigate further transmission and protect public health across the country.
