Gurov Sees Conspiracy against Interior Ministry Secretary General

Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly stated support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, following allegations made by Kandev himself. In a video message on Friday, Gurov asserted that both he and the caretaker government fully back Kandev, adding that “Every honest Bulgarian citizen will stand behind him as well.”

Kandev’s comments followed reports that he faced pressure to resign after individuals, including one known as “Kartofa,” provided false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Gurov characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” The Prime Minister stated that this alleged conspiracy against the Secretary General surfaced after efforts were made to halt attacks on democracy and recover millions of euros intended to undermine elections.

Gurov implicated a former police chief and the businessman “Kartofa” in this alleged conspiracy. Calling it revenge, he issued a warning to those who might oppose lawful action. He specifically named the Sofia City Prosecution Office and prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, describing her as an associate of Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov, who is noted for his influence within the Bulgarian judiciary and is currently a fugitive.

Furthermore, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev had previously informed media outlets that in 2021, Rusinova traveled with Petrov to North Macedonia. Information purportedly from the Interior Ministry suggested Rusinova made repeated border crossings, accompanied at times by Petrov and several other individuals. Gurov concluded his statement by addressing political opponents, asserting that the government and the Bulgarian public are aware of their actions and are not intimidated.
