Gurov Sees Conspiracy against Interior Ministry Secretary General

In a video statement posted on Facebook, caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov announced his full support for Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Gurov stated that the entire caretaker government stood behind Kandev, adding that “every honest Bulgarian citizen will stand behind him as well.”

Gurov’s remarks followed statements from Kandev, who claimed he was subjected to pressure to resign. Kandev alleged that false testimony was presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office by individuals, including one identified by the nickname “Kartofa.” The Prime Minister characterized the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism” and a conspiracy emerging after actions were taken to prevent undermining elections.

Gurov indicated that a conspiracy targeting the Secretary General was underway, naming a former police chief and the individual known as “Kartofa” as involved parties. He framed the actions as retaliation against those who work lawfully. The Prime Minister specifically criticized Prosecutor Emiliya Rusinova, noting her connection to Petyo ‘The Euro’ Petrov, a figure associated with influencing the Bulgarian judiciary and currently a fugitive.

Furthermore, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev previously alleged that in 2021, Rusinova had traveled with Petrov to North Macedonia. Dechev stated that intelligence indicated Rusinova crossed the border multiple times on these trips, accompanied by Petrov and several other individuals. The statements from gurov and the interior ministry highlight escalating tensions regarding the leadership within the ministry and the integrity of the judicial process.
