More Measles Cases Reported, Bringing Total to 165

Six additional instances of measles have been reported in Bulgaria, escalating the cumulative total to 165 cases as of April 23, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. The recent cluster of cases was distributed across several regions, with two new reports originating in Vratsa, two in Lovech, and single cases each recorded in Pleven and Sofia. Addressing the ongoing public health concern, authorities confirmed that the first eight cases of measles were initially identified by the Ministry on March 19, with the initial outbreak centered in the Vratsa region.

In response to the spread, health authorities mandated emergency immunization protocols for all children who had not received adequate vaccination coverage. Speaking on Wednesday, Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate at the Ministry of Health, provided an update on preventative measures. Tasev stated that since early March, 20,000 children had been successfully vaccinated against measles, mumps, and rubella.

These figures underscore the ongoing efforts within the national health system to control the spread of measles. The Ministry continues to monitor the situation closely, emphasizing the importance of maintaining high vaccination rates to protect community health and curb the incidence of measles cases.
