As of April 23, Bulgaria has reported an increase in measles activity, with six new cases registered, bringing the national total to 165, according to data released by the Ministry of Health. The recent additions were distributed across several regions: Vratsa accounted for two new cases, Lovech reported two, while Pleven and Sofia each recorded one additional case. In response to the outbreak, the Ministry of Health confirmed that the initial eight cases were identified on March 19, originating in the Vratsa region.
Following these early reports, authorities mandated emergency immunization measures for all children who had missed scheduled vaccinations. Addressing the public health situation, Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate at the Ministry of Health, reported on vaccination efforts. He stated that since early March, 20,000 children have received vaccinations protecting against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR).
These figures highlight the ongoing public health response to control the spread of the highly contagious disease. The continuous monitoring of cases and the targeted vaccination campaigns remain central to the national strategy aimed at maintaining community immunity and protecting public health.
