The European Union possesses sufficient reserves of aviation fuel, with the capacity to activate emergency stocks for a period of up to three months, according to Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism. Speaking at the Delphi Economic Forum, Tzitzikostas addressed the ongoing energy crisis, suggesting that flight cancellations reported by some airlines are primarily linked to escalating fuel costs rather than actual supply shortages. The Commissioner characterized the current energy situation as historically significant and predicted challenging conditions over the summer months.
Furthermore, Tzitzikostas warned that the global ramifications could be severe if the conflict in the Middle East does not reach a swift resolution. In response to geopolitical challenges, he highlighted the EU’s military mobility plan, which involves the modernization of 500 strategically important sites across Europe. In other economic forecasts, Tzitzikostas anticipated a notable downturn in tourist arrivals originating from Asia heading to Europe.
The Delphi Forum itself continues through April 25th, featuring over 200 discussions and panels involving approximately 1,200 international speakers. Attendees represent governments, academia, international organizations, and business sectors, with discussions centering on geopolitics, economic trends, and technological advancements.
