Has Sufficient Reserves of Aviation Fuel, Says Transport Commissioner

During his participation in the Delphi Economic Forum, the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, stated that the European Union maintains sufficient reserves of aviation fuel, noting that emergency stocks could be activated for a period of up to three months. Addressing the ongoing energy crisis, Tzitzikostas suggested that the flight cancellations reported by some airlines are primarily linked to escalating fuel prices rather than genuine supply shortages. The Commissioner characterized the current energy situation as historically significant and predicted a challenging summer ahead.

He cautioned that the global implications of an unresolved conflict in the Middle East could be severe. In terms of domestic strategy, Tzitzikostas highlighted the EU’s military mobility plan, which involves the modernization of 500 strategically vital sites across Europe. Furthermore, he forecast a potential downturn in tourist travel originating from Asia heading to Europe.

The Delphi Forum continues through Saturday, April 25, hosting over 200 discussions and panels involving approximately 1,200 international speakers. Participants represent governments, academic bodies, international organizations, and the business sector, focusing discussions on geopolitics, economic trends, and technological transformations. These remarks provide an overview of the bloc’s current energy security posture amid global volatility.
