Bulgarians Join EU Citizens’ Crisis Preparedness Online Debate

A total of 150 citizens from various European Union member states, including four Bulgarians, are convening online from April 24 to 26 for the second session of the European Citizens’ Panel on Preparedness. The discussions aim to develop actionable concepts for enhancing the resilience of EU citizens against future crises. The goal is to ensure that the measures outlined under the EU preparedness union strategy are both inclusive and responsive to the needs of the populace.

Participants are deepening their examination of priorities previously identified during discussions held in March. Key areas under review include fostering citizen engagement, promoting education, emphasizing solidarity and inclusion, maintaining the integrity of communication—including combating disinformation—and refining crisis management protocols, alongside other facets of European preparedness. The panel’s plenary sessions are available for live viewing on the panel’s dedicated website.

The four Bulgarians participating hail from Sofia, Burgas, Isperih, and Reberkovo. Antoaneta Petkova, representing Reberkovo, noted to BTA that she expressed hope that the group, which also includes representatives from Germany, Italy, and Czechia, would continue debating previously highlighted proposals. Specifically, Petkova mentioned the introduction of educational training for all ages, encompassing both theoretical and practical crisis response knowledge.

Furthermore, she indicated that four other concepts related to disaster and crisis response would also be discussed during the sessions.
