, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors on Friday of being used, once again, to target officials involved in institutional reform within Bulgaria. These accusations followed statements by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who claimed he was facing pressure and being subjected to false testimony regarding unspecified misconduct. Speaking at a press briefing, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev stated that the prosecution service appeared to be part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev asserted, “Obviously, the Borissov-Peevski model continues to function and is looking for its place, while the prosecution is once again being used, as before, to hit those who are working.” His comments followed Kandev’s earlier claim on Facebook that he had received calls from unknown numbers alleging that false testimony was being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, efforts he believed aimed at forcing his resignation.

Mirchev suggested that the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov represented retaliation for their previous efforts to guarantee fair elections. He deemed the alleged fabrication of allegations against Kandev and the interior minister unacceptable. Furthermore, Mirchev announced that he and co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov submitted a report concerning a media investigation alleging that former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov was involved in accepting bribes for influencing court decisions.

Bozhanov also called for thorough checks on senior magistrates’ assets, including acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov and Cholakov. Additionally, Yes, Bulgaria plans to request a parliamentary hearing regarding whether Delyan Peevski was using private jets for international travel without declaring the expenses in his financial statements.
