, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors in Bulgaria on Friday of being politically targeted, alleging the institution is being used against officials involved in institutional reform. The statements followed claims by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who stated he faced pressure and false testimony regarding unspecified wrongdoing. Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being employed as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev argued that this model continues to operate, with the prosecution once again being used to target reform advocates.

His comments followed Kandev’s assertion on Facebook that he was warned to “go home” and that individuals were providing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, which he believes aims to force his resignation. Mirchev and party co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov framed the current pressure as retaliation against officials who previously guaranteed fair elections. They stated that the prosecution and the alleged model are attempting to strike back.

Furthermore, Mirchev announced that the party had submitted a report to prosecutors concerning a media investigation alleging that former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov was involved in accepting bribes for court decisions. Bozhanov called for thorough checks of related reports and a review of senior magistrates’ assets. He also noted that Yes, Bulgaria intends to request a parliamentary hearing regarding another media report questioning whether Delyan Peevski repeatedly used private jets abroad without declaring the travel in his financial statements.

The party aims to push for a committee to examine the financing of these private flights.
