The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors on Friday of being used to target officials engaged in institutional reform. This statement followed claims made by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who stated he was facing pressure and was being smeared through false testimony regarding unspecified misconduct. Speaking at a briefing, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev stated, “Obviously, the Borissov-Peevski model continues to function and is looking for its place, while the prosecution is once again being used, as before, to hit those who are working.” These remarks followed Kandev’s earlier video statement on Friday, where he claimed he had received calls from unknown numbers informing him that individuals were providing false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office.
Kandev indicated that he believed the objective was to force his resignation and maintained his resolve. Mirchev suggested that the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov constituted an attempt at retaliation for having guaranteed fair elections. He argued that the prosecution and the Peevski-Borissov model were attempting to counteract this.
Furthermore, Mirchev announced that he and fellow co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov had submitted an alert to the prosecution service regarding a media investigation alleging recordings of conversations between former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary involved in alleged bribery for court decisions. Bozhanov called for thorough checks on related reports and asset reviews of senior magistrates, including acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov and Cholakov. The party also intends to request a parliamentary hearing concerning whether Delyan Peevski utilized private jets abroad without declaring the travel in his financial interests statement, suggesting this was not consistent with his reported means.
