Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev accused elements within the police force of employing tactics to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, in a Facebook post on Friday. Earlier that day, Kandev stated in a video message that he faced pressure to resign due to false testimonies being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Adding to the tension, acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov also addressed the situation via video message, characterizing it as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov asserted that a conspiracy against the Secretary General had emerged following actions taken to halt attacks on democracy and seize funds misused to undermine elections.
Dechev publicly voiced his support for Kandev, stating his confidence in his integrity and noting that the future interior minister would face significant responsibility in resolving what he termed a “fabricated scandal.”
Dechev further highlighted the efforts of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry over the past two months, emphasizing their success in minimizing electoral crimes, which he described as a threat to Bulgarian democracy. He attributed this achievement to significant effort and resolve, framing the situation as a struggle against forces attempting to undermine the will of the citizens. Dechev concluded by suggesting that the adversary in this conflict had allies within key judicial positions.
