, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors on Friday of being politically used to target officials involved in institutional reform within Bulgaria. The statement followed claims by acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, Georgi Kandev, who reported facing pressure and false testimony regarding unspecified misconduct. Speaking at a party briefing, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being manipulated as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev stated, “The prosecution is once again being used, as before, to hit those who are working.” These comments came after Kandev shared a video detailing calls from hidden numbers alleging false testimony was being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, which Kandev stated was an attempt to force his resignation.

Mirchev contended that the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov was retaliatory. The party also announced submitting an alert to the prosecution regarding a media investigation alleging illicit recordings involving former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov. Party co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov called for thorough reviews of related reports and assets belonging to senior magistrates, including acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov.

Furthermore, Yes, Bulgaria requested a parliamentary hearing concerning reports alleging Delyan Peevski’s undeclared use of private jets for international travel. The party plans to push for an ad hoc committee to examine the financing of these private flights. These actions highlight the party’s concern over the integrity of state institutions and the potential for political maneuvering within the Bulgaria judicial system.
