, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors on Friday of being used, once again, to target officials involved in institutional reform within Bulgaria. These accusations followed statements from Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who claimed he was facing pressure and defamation through false testimony regarding unspecified wrongdoing. Speaking at a party briefing, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was being utilized as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.” Mirchev stated that this model, named after GERB leader Boyko Borissov and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski, continues to function, alleging the prosecution is once again being used to target reformers.

Mirchev’s comments followed Kandev’s earlier declaration on Facebook that he had received calls warning him to “go home,” alleging false testimony was being provided against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, which he believed aimed to force his resignation. Mirchev characterized the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov as retaliatory. Furthermore, Mirchev announced that the party had submitted an alert to the prosecution service regarding a journalistic investigation by BIRD.

This investigation alleged recordings of conversations between former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary concerning bribery involving court decisions. Mirchev called Cholakov “Peevski’s lawyer,” demanding an immediate investigation. Bozhanov added that the prosecution service and the Inspectorate to the Supreme Judicial Council should conduct thorough checks on senior magistrates’ assets.

Additionally, Yes, Bulgaria plans to request a parliamentary hearing concerning media reports questioning whether Delyan Peevski has been using private jets for travel abroad without declaring it in his financial statements.
