Customs officers at the Lesovo border crossing seized a significant quantity of narcotics on Friday. The seizure occurred when authorities inspected a lorry transporting washing machines. According to the Customs Agency, nearly 362 kg of marijuana was discovered in the vehicle.
The seized substance is estimated to be valued at approximately EUR 3 million at judicial prices. On Thursday, the lorry, which bore Romanian registration plates, arrived at the Lesovo border crossing on the outbound lane from Bulgaria. The driver, identified as a Turkish national, presented documentation indicating the cargo consisted solely of washing machines in transit from Romania to Turkey via Bulgaria, and stated that there was nothing else to declare.
During a thorough customs inspection, officers discovered 25 boxes concealed atop the declared washing machines. These boxes contained a total of 338 vacuum-sealed packages of dry, green leafy material. Field drug tests conducted on the contents yielded positive results for marijuana.
Authorities subsequently seized a total gross weight of 362 kg of the narcotic. The driver has been detained, and pre-trial proceedings have been initiated in connection with the incident. Furthermore, the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Yambol is preparing to submit a request to the court for the imposition of a remand measure of detention in custody.
