Ensemble Bulgari Based in Cyprus to Perform at Munich Gathering in May

The dance ensemble Bulgari, based in Cyprus, is scheduled to perform at the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling folklore festival. The event will take place at BMW Park in Munich, Germany, from May 15 to May 17. Todor Zdravkov, head of the ensemble, and Aneliya Hristova, Chair of Culture Club Bulgarche – Larnaca, informed the BTA that this marks Bulgari’s debut performance as an independent group.

Previously, the ensemble was affiliated with a larger group representing the Bulgarian community in Cyprus. For this performance, Bulgari will present a piece titled Trakiyski Zadyavki, which Zdravkov described as more than just a dance. He explained that it narrates the journey of young lovers, encompassing everything from childhood games and the blossoming of affection to the scrutiny of neighbors in a village square.

The piece is framed by Thracian tradition, representing a story of enduring, pure love conveyed through Bulgarian dance and folklore. Zdravkov noted that the preparation for the performance has been demanding. He reported having to adjust the choreography recently due to others staging similar material and the inability of several lead dancers to attend.

Consequently, the ensemble will perform with its folk dance group, marking a first-time stage choreography experience for them, which he described as a significant challenge. Bulgari was founded by Zdravkov in 2008 and later merged with Culture Club Bulgarche – Larnaca, chaired by Hristova, in 2020. The festival itself is organized for amateur folklore ensembles performing outside of Bulgaria.

The 11th edition in Munich anticipates attendance from over 100 dance ensembles and 4,000 guests.
