Romania’s largest parliamentary party, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have announced a joint effort to table a no-confidence motion against the Government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. This development followed the resignation of several PSD ministers from Bolojan’s cabinet on April 23. The PSD issued a statement clarifying that the resignations formalized the party’s withdrawal of political backing from the Prime Minister.
According to the party, Bolojan no longer possesses the parliamentary majority necessary to maintain leadership legitimacy. Meanwhile, AUR’s Petrisor Peiu stated that the collaboration is limited solely to the no-confidence proposal, noting that AUR’s ultimate political objective is to prompt early elections, citing the current government’s perceived inability to manage the economy. Prime Minister Bolojan rejected the calls for resignation, asserting his intention to continue fulfilling his mandate while working on establishing a minority government.
Amid the escalating political instability, President Nicusor Dan conducted talks with leaders of the ruling coalition during the week of April 20-26. The President confirmed that discussions had ruled out governance with anti-Western forces, specifically mentioning AUR. These consultations emphasized cooperation on key strategic initiatives, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE.
The ongoing dialogues, hosted by the President, remain focused on these major policy programs among the governing coalition parties.
