‘s Social Democratic Party, Alliance for the Union of Romanians to Table No-Confidence Vote Against Bolojan Government

Romania’s largest parliamentary party, the Social Democratic Party (PSD), and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have jointly announced their intention to table a no-confidence motion against the government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The announcement was made via a joint statement on Monday. This action follows the resignation of several PSD ministers from Bolojan’s administration on April 23.

The PSD stated that these resignations formalized the party’s withdrawal of political support, asserting that Bolojan no longer possessed the majority support required to lead the government. During the announcement, PSD representative Marian Neacsu welcomed any colleagues who wished to support the initiative through voting. Petrisor Peiu of AUR clarified that while the two groups are cooperating on the no-confidence proposal, they currently lack broader agreements.

AUR stated its objective is to prompt early elections, arguing that the current administration is ill-equipped to manage the national economy. In response, Bolojan indicated he would not resign and maintained that he would continue fulfilling his mandate, adding that he is working on establishing a minority government. Amid the ongoing political instability, President Nicusor Dan held consultations during the week of April 20-26 with leaders from the ruling coalition.

The President confirmed that discussions centered on key programs, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE. The PSD’s involvement and the broader political maneuvering suggest deep divisions within the governing structure, even as the President seeks consensus on major national projects.
