Literature on the Rise, Bulgarian Book Association Deputy Chair Says

Bulgarian literature is experiencing a notable resurgence, according to Gergana Dimitrova, Deputy Chair of the Bulgarian Book Association. Speaking on Monday, Dimitrova highlighted Bulgaria’s upcoming role as the guest of honor at the 22nd Thessaloniki International Book Fair, scheduled for May 7-10. Dimitrova attributed the increased international profile of Bulgarian literature to several factors, citing the global success of authors such as Georgi Gospodinov and the attention garnered by Rene Karabash for the Booker Prize.

Furthermore, she noted the establishment of the Sofia Literary Agency, which she stated is effectively connecting Bulgarian writers with foreign publishers. According to Dimitrova, the growth is rooted not only in recent successes but also in the rich stylistic diversity within Bulgarian literature, much of which is awaiting international presentation. At the Thessaloniki Book Fair, a wide array of authors and translators will participate.

Featured participants include children’s authors Kapka Kaneva and Zornitsa Hristova, alongside established writers like Rene Karabash, Alexandar Sekulov, and others. The translators joining the forum include Zdravka Mihaylova and Spiros Pappas. The event’s slogan, “Literature Without Borders,” emphasizes the exchange of literary works.

Dimitrova explained that while the exchange of literature within the Balkans is natural, the festival aims to strengthen cross-border publishing. She anticipates that Bulgaria’s participation will further facilitate the publication of Bulgarian authors in Greece. The program will conclude on May 10 with a concert featuring the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra.
