Literature on the Rise, Bulgarian Book Association Deputy Chair Says

Bulgarian literature is currently experiencing a notable resurgence, according to Gergana Dimitrova, Deputy Chair of the Bulgarian Book Association. Speaking to the Bulgarian News Agency on Monday, Dimitrova discussed Bulgaria’s upcoming presence at the 22nd Thessaloniki International Book Fair, scheduled for May 7-10, where the country will be the guest of honor. Dimitrova attributed the promotion of Bulgarian literature to the international success of authors like Georgi Gospodinov, which has also drawn attention to writers such as Rene Karabash for the Booker Prize.

Furthermore, she highlighted the establishment of the Sofia Literary Agency, run by Gergana Pancheva, as a crucial development facilitating connections between Bulgarian writers and foreign publishers. She asserted that this upward trend is rooted not only in recent achievements but also in the diverse styles and unique characteristics present within Bulgarian literature, much of which remains underexposed internationally. Dimitrova expressed optimism, suggesting that positive momentum continues for the field.

At the Thessaloniki Book Fair, a wide array of authors and translators will participate. Featured participants include children’s authors Kapka Kaneva and Zornitsa Hristova, alongside writers such as Rene Karabash, Alexandar Sekulov, and Iana Boukova. Translators Zdravka Mihaylova, Blagorodna Filevska-Panagu, and Spiros Pappas are also scheduled to attend.

Dimitrova noted the diversity of the material, featuring works both new and familiar to Greek readers. The guiding slogan for Bulgaria’s participation is “Literature Without Borders,” aiming to showcase the exchange of literature within the Balkans. Dimitrova anticipates that the event will further promote the publication of Bulgarian authors in Greece, an exchange that has already seen Greek authors published in Bulgaria.

The participation will conclude with a concert featuring pianist Svetlin Roussev and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra.
