Slaveykov Calls for Living Approach to Literary Tradition, Says Poet Yordan Eftimov

Poet, literary scholar, and critic Yordan Eftimov advocated for a dynamic approach to literary tradition during an event in Tryavna on Monday. Eftimov spoke at the launch of a nationwide discussion series marking the 160th birth anniversary of the prominent Bulgarian poet Pencho Slaveykov and focusing on Bulgarian modernism, an initiative organized by BTA. Eftimov characterized Slaveykov not only as a significant author but also as a notable public figure.

He stated that such commemorative efforts are crucial for reviving the authentic memory of great cultural personalities, countering the modern educational tendency to reduce these figures to mere stereotypes. Furthermore, he cautioned against treating writers as “lifeless idols,” referencing Slaveykov’s concept of “petrification.”

A key objective, Eftimov noted, is to foster a national self-portrait through fresh interpretations of familiar works, thereby assisting Bulgarians in gaining a deeper understanding of themselves. He underscored BTA’s role in disseminating accurate information and expert perspectives amid an environment marked by misinformation.

Eftimov added that the agency’s expanding network will provide a comprehensive view of how Slaveykov is remembered across Bulgaria and how his ideas continue to influence discourse. He highlighted Slaveykov’s dual role as both a modernizer and a Europeanizer, suggesting that contemporary attitudes toward him reflect the trajectory of Bulgaria’s own development. The discussion emphasized the ongoing importance of a vibrant engagement with the literary legacy of Slaveykov.
