Poet, literary scholar, and critic Yordan Eftimov advocated for a dynamic and living approach to the preservation of literary traditions during a discussion held in Tryavna on Monday. The event marked the launch of a nationwide series dedicated to the 160th birth anniversary of Pencho Slaveykov and the broader theme of Bulgarian modernism, organized by BTA. Eftimov characterized Slaveykov not only as a significant author but also as a prominent public figure whose legacy warrants deep cultural examination.
He stated that such commemorative initiatives are vital for reviving the authentic memory of major cultural figures, arguing that modern educational approaches sometimes risk reducing these figures to mere stereotypes. Furthermore, he cautioned against the practice of transforming writers into “lifeless idols,” referencing Slaveykov’s concept of “petrification.”
A central objective, according to Eftimov, is to facilitate a national self-portrait by encouraging new interpretations of familiar literary works, thereby aiding the Bulgarian populace in self-understanding. He underscored the critical role of BTA in disseminating accurate information and expert perspectives amid widespread misinformation.
Eftimov noted that the agency’s expanding network will provide a comprehensive overview of how the poet Slaveykov is remembered across Bulgaria and how his intellectual contributions continue to influence discourse. He concluded by highlighting Slaveykov’s dual role as both a modernizer and a Europeanizer, suggesting that current perceptions of him mirror Bulgaria’s own ongoing developmental journey.
