Launches National Series on Pencho Slaveykov and Bulgarian Modernism

The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) initiated a nationwide series of discussions across its national press clubs to commemorate the 160th birth anniversary of poet Pencho Slaveykov and the broader movement of Bulgarian modernism. The observance began with an event titled “Pencho Slaveykov Today” held at the Slaveykov House Museum in his hometown of Tryavna. The campaign will be featured in the December issue of LIK magazine, which will include reports from the discussions and a special section comprising 160 individual contributions.

BTA Director General Kiril Valchev stated that Slaveykov represents a model for the modern individual—one who embraces new ideas while pursuing spiritual growth and universal values without abandoning national identity. Valchev noted that Slaveykov’s life and work were shaped by his father and Bulgaria’s liberation struggles, recalling the poet’s 1912 Nobel Prize nomination. Literary scholar Yordan Eftimov stated that a primary goal of the initiative is to create a national self-portrait through new readings of familiar works, helping the public understand their culture amid misinformation.
