Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, a joint effort by the St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, is scheduled to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday. This display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.

The exhibition features an extensive collection of over 130 historical documents. These materials—including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates—document the preparation, progression, suppression, and subsequent consequences of the April Uprising. Furthermore, the collection offers insights into the international response to the revolt.

The inclusion of Ottoman documents provides a perspective from both the local and central Ottoman authorities of the time. Among the significant figures documented are prominent individuals of the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The display showcases both well-known and lesser-documented materials, some of which are being exhibited for the first time.

The scope of the cultural presentation covers events across all revolutionary districts and examines the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international reaction to the uprising. The exhibition was formally inaugurated in Sofia on April 20. The event is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and is financially supported by the Ministry of Culture.

The comprehensive nature of the displayed records provides a detailed historical record of the period surrounding the uprising.
