The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, is scheduled to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.
The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The collection features over 130 historical documents, encompassing protocols, letters, telegrams, and appeals. These materials provide comprehensive documentation regarding the preparation, progression, suppression, and aftermath of the revolutionary period.
Furthermore, the exhibition offers insight into the international reaction to the revolt, while included Ottoman documents present the perspectives of both the local and central Ottoman authorities. Among the authors represented in the materials are significant historical figures, including Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The display showcases a mix of well-known and previously unseen documents, tracing the events across all revolutionary districts and highlighting the role of the Bulgarian emigre community and the broader international response to the uprising.
The initiative underscores the depth of Bulgarian cultural history. The exhibition was previously inaugurated in Sofia on April 20, under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and with financial support from the Ministry of Culture. The presentation of these primary sources aims to illuminate the multifaceted nature of the historical events surrounding the struggle for national freedom.
