The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, commenced at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.
The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features an extensive collection of over 130 primary source documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials provide comprehensive insight into the preparation, progression, suppression, and aftermath of the significant historical event.
Furthermore, the documents illuminate the international reaction to the revolt, while included Ottoman records offer perspectives from both local and central Ottoman authorities. The authorship of the displayed materials spans prominent figures of the period, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The collection presents both widely recognized and previously unknown documents, tracing the events across various revolutionary districts and detailing the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international community’s response.
This significant cultural undertaking was previously inaugurated in Sofia on April 20. The exhibition is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and receives financial backing from the Ministry of Culture. The display serves as a detailed historical resource, solidifying the documentation surrounding the period of national struggle and the impact of the uprising on Bulgarian history.
