Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, will commence at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.

This display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features a collection exceeding 130 historical documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials offer comprehensive documentation regarding the preparation, progression, suppression, and subsequent consequences of the April Uprising.

Furthermore, the documents illuminate the international reaction to the revolt. Insight into the viewpoints of both local and central Ottoman authorities is provided through the inclusion of relevant Ottoman records. Among the significant authors represented are prominent historical figures such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov.

The display presents a mix of well-known and lesser-documented materials, with several items being shown for the first time. The scope of the exhibition traces the events across various revolutionary districts and highlights the role of the Bulgarian emigre community, alongside the international response to the conflict. The event was previously opened in Sofia on April 20.

It is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and receives financial support from the Ministry of Culture. The presentation serves as a significant cultural resource, allowing the public to examine primary sources detailing this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history.
