Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, is scheduled to open at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.

This display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features more than 130 primary source documents, including protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials provide comprehensive documentation regarding the preparation, progression, suppression, and subsequent consequences of the April Uprising.

The collection not only details the internal revolutionary events but also illuminates the international response to the conflict. Furthermore, the inclusion of Ottoman documents offers valuable insight into the viewpoints held by both local and central Ottoman authorities during that period. Among the key authors represented in the documentation are prominent historical figures such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov.

The display balances well-known historical accounts with lesser-documented materials, some of which are being presented for the first time. The scope covers revolutionary activities across various districts and highlights the critical role played by the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international reaction to the conflict. The exhibition was officially inaugurated in Sofia on April 20.

It is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and receives financial support from the Ministry of Culture. The presentation serves as a significant academic and cultural resource, preserving the detailed narrative of the uprising for public review.
