The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, opened at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.
The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The exhibition features an extensive collection of over 130 primary documents. These materials—which include protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates—document the entire arc of the April Uprising, covering its preparation, course of events, suppression, and lasting consequences.
The displayed documents offer multiple viewpoints, detailing the international response to the unrest alongside Ottoman records that provide insight into the perspectives of both local and central Ottoman authorities. Among the document authors are significant historical figures of the period, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The display presents a mix of well-known and previously unseen materials, tracing the events across various revolutionary districts and highlighting the role of the Bulgarian emigre community and the international reaction to the uprising.
This significant cultural undertaking was officially launched in Sofia on April 20. The exhibition is held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and is supported financially by the Ministry of Culture. The collection serves as a comprehensive historical resource, providing detailed documentation of this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history.
