Cultural Centre in Skopje to Host Exhibition Marking 150th Anniversary of April Uprising

The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising.

The display opened at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje. The exhibition features over 130 historical documents, encompassing protocols, letters, telegrams, and appeals. These materials provide a comprehensive look at the events surrounding the uprising, detailing its preparation, course, suppression, and subsequent consequences.

The collection offers diverse perspectives, including records from the local and central Ottoman authorities, alongside documentation detailing the international response to the unrest. Among the document authors are prominent figures from the era, such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The display presents both widely recognized and lesser-known archival materials.

These documents trace the revolutionary activities across various districts, shed light on the role of the Bulgarian emigre community, and illustrate the global reaction to the national struggle. The exhibition was formally inaugurated in Sofia on April 20, under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and with financial support from the Ministry of Culture. The curated collection aims to provide deep insight into this pivotal moment in Bulgarian history by examining primary sources that chronicle the national aspirations and challenges of the time.
